This cool jazz tune is sort of the antithesis of the way if feels around my house these days. So it is a sort of antidote to the chaos, for late at night…
Cardinals generally stop singing in mid-August; after that they only sound the one-note “pip!” until some time in February. But yesterday morning I heard one singing his heart out. I don’t know if this is a sign of an easy winter, or just a crazy bird.
Around here, “soaking up baby rays” refers to holding a sleeping baby. The sweetness and freshness are palpable, and you can feel the anxiety and stress wash away. Holding a screaming baby is quite another experience, but this baby has a sweet cry, one that evokes only tenderness.
While I have vented plenty about conservative Catholics, I should note that the local Catholic homeschooling group – mostly right-wingers – is bringing us dinner every other night for over a month. So if there was ever any uncertainty about the nature of my political orneryness , let it be known that I have never had any doubt about the personal kindness and generosity of well-meaning folks who have certain moral blind spots, whether on the right or left.
Ross Douthot, usually my favorite conservative, wrote a column last week coinciding with the anniversary of Dr King’s great speech on the Mall in DC. In it, he reiterated the common conservative insistence that things are much better, thank you, than in the days of Dr King, that there are no Bull Connors or George Wallaces on the contemporary scene. Well, of course. Outspoken racism is no longer socially acceptable, and to listen to conservatives you would think that they had been on the frontlines of the Civil Rights movement. They give no credence to other and more subtle forms or racism, nor do they acknowledge that 500 years of oppression are not wiped away in 50 years. But the most astonishing claim that Mr Douthat made was that there is greater racial equity because the white working class now shares in the unemployment, poverty, family dysfunction that have long plagued blacks. Only a Republican could find a silver lining to the destruction of the white working class.
But he is a far cry from the mailing I saw the other day, from something called the United States Justice Foundation that screamed “JIHAD IS BEING WAGED AGAINST YOU AND THE REST OF AMERICA RIGHT NOW…AND IT IS COMING FROM THE WHITE HOUSE!” Sheesh. That would explain, somehow, Obama’s drone wars? And the continued War Without End, Amen?
This morning heralded the first cool day since I don’t know when; it was almost like Fall. I realize that there is still warm weather coming, that summer holds on for most of September around here, and we are still inundated with tomatoes from our small garden. But soon it will be time to pick the green ones and fry them, fearful of frost. I love Autumn, but it always intensifies my melancholia…
