Pope Francis, in his Easter homily,¬†ended his address by calling, with growing intensity, for “peace in the whole world, still divided by greed looking for easy gain.”

Wait. Isn’t that what Capitalism is all about? Isn’t that what they have been telling us for thirty years is a good thing?

Throughout Eastern Europe Pascha is celebrated with eggs that are traditionaly decorated with a hot wax technique that results in quite astonishingly beautiful results.

This is a very difficult art; I did it a few years ago, and it made me appreciate iconography, where any mistake can be corrected. Not with pysanky (the Ukrainian term for the art): wax can unexpectedly smear or come out of the stylus and the egg is ruined, or you can drop the egg and break it. Hours of work can be destroyed in a second. Both great patience and a very steady hand are required to create these sort of intricately beautiful eggs:
