Don’t Be Stupid

Love is a weapon that cuts without wounding, and ennobles the one who wields it; it is a sword that heals.

Dr. Martin Luther King

Almost inevitably, the Occupy Wall Street protests have recently turned violent, with protesters in Oakland lobbying rocks at police and vandalizing stores. This is stupid on many levels.

1) To be practical, you can’t win. The police have way more weapons than you can possibly come up with.

2) It gives the cops an excuse to beat you up. While many police officers are no doubt noble, it is naive not to recognize that a job that involves socially sanctioned violence attracts bullies. Don’t give them an excuse to crack your head. If they get violent when you are being peaceful, they look evil. If it is in response to your provocation, you look like you have it coming.

3) It is self-defeating. At a time when more Americans than ever are open to a radical critique of the system, your violence will repel potential allies.

4) Most importantly, it damages your soul and your movement. If your movement is not about love, if it is not beautiful, it isn’t, in the long run, going to accomplish anything worthwhile. Violence does not give birth to justice.

Only stupid people or provocateurs think violence is a good idea.
