“I have always believed that those that foster the entitlement mentality and the welfare state do more to harm humanity than almost any criminal. Hard work has its own rewards, and not only financial. Self-esteem is something that is priceless. Without it human achievement is negligible. With it, there is no limit to what an individual can accomplish.
I personally know men that were born into extremely disadvantaged circumstances. How about a thatched hut with a dirt floor in Africa? Two such men that I know went on to become multi-millionaires in the United States. They did not expend valuable energy complaining about how bad they had it. They expended a flood of blood, sweat, and tears working multiple jobs at a time, saving their hard-earned money, and ultimately achieving the American dream.
Losers make excuses. Winners make it happen. It may sound harsh, but it’s true.”
Ayn Rand? Paul Ryan? Robert Sirico?
Nah, it’s John “Black Sheep Dog” Corapi. Besides denigrating the poor and workers and preaching the gospel of rugged individualism, he is promoting the latest version of his autobiography, due later this month, called -with no apparent irony- “Don’t Look Back”.
That there are still those who believe every word of the BS Dawg is astonishing, and a testament to human gullibility. While some may welcome his latest attempt to make a buck, er, set the record straight, I for one have lost interest. I always was suspicious of him and his tall tales- a contemporary of Corapi’s, a Green Beret commander in Vietnam, told me pointedly that Corapi’s story of his whole Special Forces class dying in combat “never happened”- at this point my intuitions have been vindicated. The man is making a spectacle of himself. His narcissism is running amok.
As far as I’m concerned, John Corapi, the Dog on the Hog, has ridden that Harley off into the sunset of complete irrelevance.
Why are you still posting about Corapi? It seems mean spirited at this point.
I thought I was done with him, but good Lord, “Losers make excuses; winners make it happen” and the whole rest of his Labor Day post is so contrary to the spirit of Christianity that I couldn’t help myself…
Daniel you are overly sensitive. He is not at all denigrating the poor he is denigrating those who “foster the entitlement mentality”.
And another thing. When it comes to Corapi you tend to exaggerate and find things that are not there. Do you really think there are many people who “who believe every word of the BS Dawg”.
I mean an irrelevant handful maybe.
I agree with JPG – when it comes to Corapi your only interest is to slam the guy in a mean spirited sort of way.
Alert…… me criticizing your approach to Corapi is not the same thing as defending Corapi.
I could care less who says it but I happen to agree that the damage done by those who have fostered “the entitlement mentality” is, has been, and will be catastrophic to millions of souls.
Maybe you should get out and meet some of these families who are on their third generation of receiving welfare. These are victims of your welfare state.
Its a great tragedy.
Have you no compassion my man?
When people speak of the “entitlement mentality” they often are speaking of social programs like Social Security and Medicare, which give many a decent living and health care they could not afford otherwise. And to speak of “losers” in such a disparaging way, along with a plug for the “American Dream”, ie, the myth that anyone can pull himself up by his bootstraps like the no doubt fictional African natives Corapi cites, is pretty far from the gospel of Christ.
Daniel – When people talk about entitlement mentality they are talking about a “mentality” or a “philosphy of life” they are not talking about Social Security and Medicare except insofar as certain people who have been corrupted in large part by the government and who have this mentality generally abuse the system get their money from SSI.
Are you trying to say the SSI and Medicare are not abused? Have you ever been to a welfare office? Have you ever seen the lines of young healthy men and women in queue at these places? Is it healthy that the love or work is extinguished in many of these people?
James,
I have worked in a homeless shelter (as a resident manager, meaning I lived there) and volunteered for the juvenile court in past years and this brought me into the “welfare office” on quite a few occasions, and brought me in frequent and rather intimate contact with a fair amount of welfare recipients. I also live in a neighborhood which has a number of welfare recipients. I don’t deny that there are abuses but I think that their financial and social cost to our culture is relatively minuscule, and I obviously have very different political and economic views than you.
What experience do you have with welfare recipients?
Oh, I should also note that my experience with welfare recipients stretches back to even before the Clinton’s welfare reform act of 1996, which greatly reduced easy access to what you and yours like to call “free handouts.” I am familiar with the processes of getting on welfare both before and after welfare reform, and I am familiar with some welfare subcultures both before and after. This is worth stating because that legislation dramatically changed the landscape of welfare in this country.
“Entitlement mentality”, Dives muttered to himself as he walked past Lazarus’ outstretched hand.
“I have always believed that those that foster the entitlement mentality and the welfare state do more to harm humanity than almost any criminal.”
I just took that as the narcissist putting others down to make himself feel superior. From what I have read, his merry band of Vegas “friends” are no less than criminals themselves, and it’s quite possible that the BS Dog’s activities have at times moved from the simply immoral into the downright criminal realm.
What better way to console yourself that no matter what kind of criminal you are, at least you are not as toxic as those freeloaders over there!
The funny part is that I know so many Catholics who just adored Corapi who would meet his definition of freeloaders, producing kid after kid and signing up for more and more food stamps, heat assistance, free health insurance, etc, wtih each increase in family size.
Yesterday I saw a bumper sticker that said, “If you can’t feed them, don’t breed them”. Sounds like that is a sentiment this con-man would like to slap on the back end of his Hawg.
More and more I think that the pro-life movement is being used a shield by some of the most anti-life anti-human-dignity con-men around (the infamous Euteneur, anybody?).
I’ve known some people with an “entitlement mentality” and they are all people with above average incomes and in possession of above average levels of wealth.
