Never mind. Even our first war was an unjust one.

To someone who rejects the heresy of Americanism, who dissents from the vast majority of his fellow citizens on “American exceptionalism”, who doesn’t believe that the United States has a quasi-Messianic mission or is a city on a hill, the celebration of the 4th of July is always ambivalent.

“America” is a religion, and I am a heretic.

I am like the unbelievers who celebrate Christmas and Easter: they are only in it for the presents and the candy.

On the 4th I am only in it for the barbecue and the fireworks.
