I visited this cathedral once, twenty years ago, and was awestruck. It is as beautiful as its more famous cousin, St Patrick’s, across the Hudson.

Monks originally brewed bock beers for fasting times. Exactly

I recently had a discussion with a woman in my Byzantine parish. She is in her eighties, though this was a shock when I was told this; she looks and acts like someone twenty years younger. She had expessed hostility to the “Ground Zero Mosque”; ie, the Manhattan Islamic cultural center founded by a moderate Sufi cleric.

She told of a trip to Dearborn Michigan: “The signs were all in Islamic! Why don’t they learn English? Our ancestors learned English when they came here.”

I pointed out that most Arabs in Dearborn are Christian, not Muslim, and that the signs are in Arabic, not “Islamic”, and I told her I knew of neighborhoods in New York where the signs were in Russian, Hebrew, or Spanish. I also noted that none of my ancestors needed to learn English, being, every one of them, from Great Britain or Ireland, and that they had been here since the 17th century on my mom’s side, and since the early 19th on my dad’s. Furthermore, they almost certainly were suspicious of her Slavic ancestors, with their foreign ways and strange religion.

In other words, suspicion about the newcomer is nothing new, and Catholics, of all people, ought to reject hostility toward Muslims:
