I read it when it came out (and reviewed it in C&T, I think) but I guess I got it from the library–at any rate I don’t have a copy. I really love the Waffle House essay. Next time I go through Covington I want to time it so I can eat there, in WP’s memory.
Speaking of Dr Percy, after he died a group of friends and I had a little memorial party. One of my friends had a friend who was a journalist and had interviewed Dr Percy in Covington, at his home. Shawn had the tape.
We poured glasses of Early Times bourbon, turned on the tape player and sat back.
Percy began the interview by pouring bourbon of his own,, for himself and the journalist. The interviewer began, being very articulate, and Percy reticent. As the interview continued we could hear the tinkle of the ice cubes change pitch as they melted and the volume of whisky diminished. As it took hold, the interviewer grew less and less articulate and began sounding somewhat confused, and Dr Percy grew more and more talkative and expressive….
