As sad as I am that it passed, I am glad to have read this article. Factory farming, the source of our food, etc. are topics I am very interested in and think we all need to be aware of.

Although not strict ones, I and my family are practically vegans. We are all, coincidentally, allergic and/or intolerant to all dairy products, my son is extrememly allergic to eggs, and we eat little meat. Of course, there are those who have told me I should try raw dairy and see if we have problems with it, believing health concerns arise due to the pasterization process.

When it comes to eating meat, I do not buy any from a restaurant or a grocery store. I only purchase it from a local farmer or eat what I occasionally hunt. This way, I avoid the contribution to the evils of factory farming.

I have done a bit of reading about Factory Farms and have watched videos of many of the animals that suffer horribly in the conditions in which they are forced to live (it made me cry). The phrase that comes to mind is "a concentration camp for animals". I'm not a vegetarian, either, but I assure you that I am eating a lot more beans these days. Also, the meat of these animals is extremely unhealthy for human consumption due to their diet, hormones, antibiotics, and more. I am not against small family farms that raise healthy, contented, well cared for animals in a natural environment. I lived on a dairy farm as a child and knew the names of each one of our 30 cows. We loved our animals. And we drank delicious, healthy, UN-pasteurized milk.

Hi, Daniel:

An excellent reflection, and one that I think is very balanced. Pope Benedict XVI has expressed disapproval of factory farming, though not in any formal document.

On the other hand, there have been a couple of conferences at the Vatican where the pressure to adopt genetically-modified organisms has been very strong. The argument is that this technology "will help feed the starving in Africa". There is reason to be sceptical of these arguments, both for food safety / justice reasons, and out of a more metaphysical concern for the integrity of what God has created.

There is an excellent article in Second Spring journal about GMOs, published in 2006. Unfortunately the article is not available online. Also, there is a livestock scientist named Temple Grandin who has apparently done some interesting work.

Ah, this brings back sweet memories. I did the hitchhiking across Canada and down the Pacific Coast with my husband at the time. What adventures! Many people who stopped were surprised to see our wedding rings; when we got stranded somewhere in Canada with a bunch of other "hippies" the local Salvation Army picked us up and gave us shelter - and since we were married, they gave us a private room...with lace curtains! We met many warm, giving people along the way - and a few scary ones, too. How far we have fallen as a society that we must be so distrustful of strangers. Thanks for the post!

Junior- If that is supposed to be satirical you have a lot of work to do. Satire is supposed to be funny.

Issue 2 overwhelmingly passed, feeding my growing scepticism about democracy in the television era.

The soundtrack is wonderful. Don't know if you're aware of it or not. Check it out.

One day, when every inch of the world is stacked to the sky with human living quarters, when the rainforests are a myth, and any green's been glazed over with pavement, the only animals left alive will be the ones we keep in cages for food. The only way to reverse this evil is to start eating humans and tell our friends and loved ones to do the same.

"...there were dead animals and remnants of campfires, etc. that led authorities in believing the local covens or Satanic cults were gathering and worshiping there....[Caelum Moore] was dedicated by City Officials in the late evening on a rainy and foggy night...."

Then the Satanists showed up, and so the occasion has been remembered as the night of Caelum and Terror.

Father Deacon Stephen- Great hitchhiking stories; the ones I shared are only the tip of the iceberg, but while we are on the subject let me mention the black country western singers (in cowboy hats) west of Chicago, hurling down the highway smoking marijuana, singing CW songs to the passenger's guitar accompaniment. At 95 miles an hour!

And Gary, thanks for sharing that. I knew people stumbled onto this site in weird ways, but you have to be the first who was researching Satanism...
