“The symptoms of disenchantment are various: the enchantment of methods that always promise better things, that of an economy that offers almost unlimited possibilities in all aspects of life to those who manage to be included in that system.”
“The suffering of innocents and the peaceful continues to slap us, the contempt for the rights of the most fragile individuals and peoples are not so far away; the empire of money with his demonic effects like drug abuse, corruption, trafficking people, including children, along with material and moral poverty are rife.”
“Not only are they violated (human rights) by terrorism, repression and assassinations, but also with the existence of conditions of extreme poverty and unjust economic structures which cause great inequalities.”
“In our ecclesiastical region there are priests who don’t baptize the children of single mothers because they weren’t conceived in the sanctity of marriage. These are today’s hypocrites. Those who clericalize the Church. Those who separate the people of God from salvation. And this poor girl who, rather than returning the child to sender, had the courage to carry it into the world, must wander from parish to parish so that it’s baptized!”
“We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least. The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers.”

GOD BLESS HIM.. I am encouraged by his choice of name, assuming it is Francis of Assisi… the intercession of Francis is needed in a war-torn and corrupted world, where the beauty of humans and the natural world are becoming so degraded.
St. Francis Xavier, actually- but his intercession fits too.
I was wrong. St. Francis of Assisi is is indeed- and let’s hope he starts by rebuilding the Jesuits, who seem to have forgotten their vow to obey the Pope.
I’ve heard no official explanation of the name choice, but given the emphasis that this man puts on simplicity in his own life, I’ll be very surprised if he didn’t have Francis of Assisi in mind.
From John Allen’s profile a few days ago: “Bergoglio’s reputation for personal simplicity also exercised an undeniable appeal – a Prince of the Church who chose to live in a simple apartment rather than the archbishop’s palace, who gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of taking the bus to work, and who cooked his own meals.”
Impressive.
I saw a press conference with Dolan and he said that Francis made it very clear when he announced his choice of a name that it was after Francis of Assisi.

LOVE the comment about the priests who refuse to baptize “illegitimate” children.
