I don’t get it. To the left is Socialism, and to the right Communism.
No, on the left is western Europe, which despite Republican mythology is not “socialist” but is rather a market economy informed by a strong social democratic emphasis, sometimes, as in Adenauer’s postwar Germany, directly influenced by Catholic social doctrine.
On the right is not “communism” but rather state capitalism. China began welcoming western corporations after the big thaw with Nixon, and I assume that the worker pictured refers to an Apple employee, as that company’s China labor conditions have recently been in the news. And in China, the state does not work to protect labor, but capital, which is why working conditions are so abysmal, and pollution so toxic.
There are two views to everything, and two sides that say “God is on mine.” My ears are open to the person who says charity is not being practiced, who teaches it lovingly, and who practices it. I’m imagining images from the riots in London, children slaving away in China. We wonder why are governments and countries are failing. It’s not because of capitalism, which is not declared a moral evil by the Church, but anything practiced with greed and lacking God’s charity. This penetrates unions, families, government institutions and churches. It is the eye of God in a way. It has to be not only in your actions but in your voice. Think of the saints who consistently scrutinized themselves before God, and in the hope He provided. You or I would say he or she is a saint, but the saint would not see it that way. If we are on the side of an issue, than that is the side we should work on. We perfect our corner through God and for Him. Just think of it. This is why Jesus is not of political nature, and it makes me smile a bit. I can imagine all this coming to fulfillment, perhaps not in this world because too many will not let go, but it is happening now and coming to fulfillment in the next.
