Had a busy week last week and never got around to replying to this.
It’s not really the 20 miles that are the problem so much as the complex scheduling that begins to take over your life when your children are older, and the competing and conflicting liturgical preferences. Also that fabulous two-income lifestyle: my wife went back to work a few years ago when the youngest child hit her teens, so now we get to do house and yard work all weekend.
I suspect the rise of the two-job marriage probably plays a hidden but very strong role in the decline of Sabbath observance. Not to mention the expansion of school schedules: the traditional summer break is probably doomed. Poor kids.
